Bitcoin has its own language – and if you’ve spent more than 10 minutes in the space, you’ve probably seen some of these terms. Here’s what they really mean.
HODL
A legendary typo for “hold” that became a mindset: Don’t sell during panic. Ride the storm, trust the long term.
FOMO
Fear of Missing Out. That feeling when price pumps and you suddenly want to buy – usually at the top. Avoid it.
FUD
Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt. Used when media or influencers spread negativity about Bitcoin – often poorly researched.
DYOR
Do Your Own Research. Always. Don’t rely on hype, headlines, or random influencers.
Sats
Short for Satoshis – the smallest unit of Bitcoin. 1 BTC = 100,000,000 sats. You don’t need a whole coin to get started.
Halving
Every 210,000 blocks (roughly every 4 years), the Bitcoin reward for miners is cut in half. This reduces new supply – a key part of Bitcoin’s design.
Maxi (Bitcoin Maximalist)
Someone who believes Bitcoin is the only crypto that truly matters – and the rest are distractions at best.
Rekt
Internet slang for “wrecked” – usually after a bad trade or decision. As in: “Bought the top and got rekt.”
To the Moon
Hopeful expression of massive price gains. Often used jokingly, sometimes unironically.
